AS ASIAN YOUTH
GO TO WAR AGAINST THE INTERNAL COLONIAL STATE, the very prejudices,
knee-jerk reactions and simplistic and historical solutions, that
were the order of the day during the early years of the latest Irish
rebellion, have, predictably, surfaced once again in the North of
England's burning towns and cities.
It seems that our ruling-owning elite
brought up on a political diet of human exploitation, from slavery
in its different forms, through colonialism, capitalism and imperialism,
but themselves devoid of political savvy, and unable to rid themselves
of their historical albatross (their post-colonial legacy) also seem
to possess no more than one set box of murderous tricks that they
repeatedly bring out, irrespective of the underlying problems. Time
and time again they have inappropriately applied identical blunderbuss
remedies in Malaya, Kenya, Cyprus, Guyana, Aden, the Gulf Trucial
States, Ireland and, now, of course, in the metropolitan heartland
itself.
The British rebellions of 2001 are
organically dissimilar to those of two decades ago. For one thing,
some of the youth, then, were incarcerated on frame-ups; others were
intimidated with threats of long prison sentences and bestial treatment
whilst in prison, so much so that they elected to leave the country
and return to the lands of their parents or grandparents.
One cannot honestly see that happening
now. For the youth in the current urban uprisings, the reasons for
rebelling are ideological and vocational, and they are prepared for
a long haul. On orders, wisely, not to cause any deaths, the heavily
protected riot police were repeatedly forced to retreat.
Recurrent prejudices that creep up
when the state imagines that it is under siege from within may be
as follows: "The racial minorities keep to themselves; they do
not mix with us". How on earth can anyone mix socially with those
who are destroying the life chances of little racial minority children,
with those who are destroying the resources, careers and employment
of the youth, or those who hand out kangaroo justice in racist courts,
or who deny 21st century medicine to the vulnerable elderly.
Recently a three year old Asian child
died in the Emergency Room of a London hospital as the result of the
gross negligence of a senior doctor. When asked whether the doctor
would face disciplinary charges, the corrupt health authority answered:
"But he is such a good doctor". If this "good doctor"
had been Asian, he would have been charged with manslaughter and jailed
for years. Daily the National Health Service approximates to a law
enforcement agency: from medical police to riot police.
Most people would consider that it
is their right, and indeed their duty, to confront those who would
harm their families or their communities. This was true even in the
days when the spear confronted the machine gun - or when the assegai
was aimed at the Maxim.
